In The Dream Racer by Melondy Roberson and James Ural, we are introduced to a boy named James. Chris, James' friend, comes to his house, excited that there will be a go-kart race. James wants to build a go-kart so he can win the cash prize being offered. James asks his father if he could make a kart to race and he was more than happy to help the boys out. While his dad was at work, James and Chris collected a bunch of stuff and got to work. When it was finished though, it didn’t look like what the boys had in mind. James' dad told them to work on decorations while he made the perfect go-kart for them. With their new go-kart ready to go, James and Chris were happy and eager to win.
The Dream Racer is a really fun and enjoyable read. We follow a young boy and his friend as they put their heads together to create something out of objects that they found in the house, which is very relatable to many kids. I like how James' dad saved the day and made them the perfect go-kart to compete with. The characters were likable and the illustrations were beautifully done. They go perfectly with the written text, making it easy for kids to follow with visual aids. Overall, I think Melondy Roberson and James Ural have done a great job with this children’s book. I hope to see more of their work in the future. It’s a book I will definitely be recommending to friends with kids.
