The Donors by Gary Turcotte is a great book that I adored and that isn’t an overstatement; a narrative with hints of crime and adventure that begins with the protagonist, Tom, needing legal assistance. Beaten, shot and left for dead in a foreign country, Tom finds himself lying on the musty Aruban jail cot, waiting for an attorney that another criminal — a local — recommended and wondering what must have happened to his best friend from pre-med and companion on the perilous path of crime, Jimmy. This is a story of what money, power, and excitement can do to two intelligent men, experts in their fields, one a gifted plastic surgeon and the other an anesthesiologist. You’ll be surprised by how they hit rock bottom and got involved in the organ trafficking business. But when things go awry, will they have the strength to give up a business that is very lucrative?
Gary Turcotte has what it takes to thrill a reader’s heart. I was pulled in from the very start by the clear voice, a first person narrative that gets the reader involved in the story in a way that is intimate and emotional. The story is filled with realism and one gets the feeling that the author has done his research on organ trafficking and created a plot structure that makes the story a page-turner. It isn’t every day that one reads fiction and feels as if it is real, and this book is one of those rare gems. The Donors will blow your mind. It is exciting, gorgeously written, and filled with surprises. The plot is unpredictable and contain twists that will add great value to the reading experience. I couldn’t put the story down, thanks to the biting humor and the charm in the narrative voice, the deeply flawed characters, and the exciting plot points.
