The Cyclopes' Eye is a work of fiction in the science fiction, action, and dystopian fiction subgenres. It is intended for the mature end of the young adult reading audience and contains the use of explicit language as well as scenes of violence, self-harm, and alcohol abuse. Penned by Jeffrey Haskey-Valerius, the plot follows Henry, a young man who has never experienced anything positive in his life. After his sister loses her eye, Henry believes he's next when he's chosen on Drill Day, a day when Axiom selects candidates to donate their eyes for research. Determined to confess his love to his best friend, Henry's plans are disrupted, and he finds himself entangled in a dangerous situation. As he and his friends attempt to escape Axiom's clutches, they must also confront Henry's troubled past, adding layers of complexity to their predicament.
Author Jeffrey Haskey-Valerius has crafted a truly thrilling sci-fi reading experience filled with suspense and intrigue. I loved the character development and the narrative focus on Henry, giving YA readers a close insight into their would-be hero as he is challenged and develops in terms of his friendships, the sacrifices he must make, and his ever-growing resilience in the face of trouble. The ensemble cast around him is equally well-developed and relatable, drawing readers into their struggles and triumphs in a well-built world that has a good internal logic and utilizes a lot of great realism to feel authentic. The fast-paced plot kept me engaged from start to finish, and there were plenty of unexpected twists and turns to add an extra layer of excitement just when the story needed it most. Overall, The Cyclopes' Eye is a captivating read that leaves a lasting impression, and I would certainly recommend it to fans of dystopian fiction everywhere.
