Tesfahun is a young member of the Akara tribe. As a youth, he looks forward to the day when he will be recognized as a man and allowed to partake in stick-fighting jousts, one of his favorite pastimes. As he matures and the day draws nearer, he begins to question the ways of the elders as it concerns a variety of issues affecting the members of his tribe. The more he thinks about it, the more his reasoning is at odds with the ways of his leaders. His inner beliefs of peace and harmony rebel against the violence he witnesses, which does not help as they are in a war of supremacy with the loathsome Kangatum. His discovery of the fate of the Minga children is the final straw that sends him on a collision course with his destiny in N.T. McQueen's The Cry Of Dry Bones.
A man's search for his identity begins with the courage to question the rationale behind generations of tradition. N.T. McQueen's depiction of the African tribal dynamic is spot-on and supported by a cast of characters that are as authentically accurate as can be expected from an impressive amount of research. Tesfahun's conversations with Kelile and Demissie paint a vivid picture of the conflict that rages within his heart. Still, the most intriguing part of this novel for me is his transition, which is highlighted by the name changes he undergoes. With each name change comes an evolution on a physical and spiritual plane, leading to a better awareness of his true self. McQueen uses impressive storytelling to reflect this in his primary character's conversations. The Cry Of Dry Bones is a thought-provoking novel in a class of its own.
