Today is Ali's birthday. She cannot wait for a very special gift from her mom and dad. She is seven years old already and can have a kitten! After breakfast, the family will visit the Humane Society to choose a pet for her. Even Ali's favorite breakfast pancakes are shaped like kittens today. Finally, the family enters the Humane Society's building and meets a helpful lady there. Ali is excited to tell her how ready she is to have a pet. The lady shows Ali and her parents the cages with kittens, but Ali realizes that choosing her future four-legged friend is hard. There is one kitten unlike all the rest and Ali wants to get a closer look. The Cross-Eyed Kitten by Judith M. Ackerman is a beautiful story for 3–7-year-old young readers and adult cat lovers.
Judith M. Ackerman's The Cross-Eyed Kitten is a story with profound meaning. The world is cruel and quick to reject those who look "abnormal." We may even ridicule and belittle them just for fun. Judith offers young readers a perfect life lesson and shows them how to be better than that. Ali is a wonderful girl with a big heart. The author perfectly describes a child responsible enough to wait for her seventh birthday to get a pet. I like Olivia Manta's illustrations. They are animated, realistic, and humorous, like the one depicting a cute raccoon on a tree. Olivia's portrayal of the cross-eyed kitten and Judith's moving and emotional narrative will inspire children to be kinder to animals and all those who need our love and kindness. The Cross-Eyed Kitten is a flawlessly edited and very well-written children's book that will leave a lasting impression on young readers.
