The Coach is a work of fiction in the sports fiction, inspirational, and drama sub-genres, and was penned by author Zhihui Zou. Set in a small town, we meet a young protagonist with big dreams when we are introduced to tennis player Jonathan. Dreaming of a really big future in the sport which he loves, Jonathan is somewhat skeptical when a new coach at school arrives with techniques he’s never even heard of before. So begins a dramatic story of a rise to the top, with important lessons about finding yourself and trusting others along the way.

Author Zhihui Zou has crafted a heart-warming tale that is easy reading for a leisurely vacation or a cozy night in. Sports fiction fans will enjoy the commitment to the character of Jonathan and his real passion for tennis, which extends from cover to cover. The work is wholesome and inspirational, focusing on a young man and how he views himself in relation to his achievements, but the story also expands into important relationships which he needs to build around him for future success. The student spirit is definitely captured in the tale, with authentic dialogue provided by the author that really helps you engage with the young protagonist and his friends. I also felt there was some great atmospheric work within the small-town location, the climate, and the general feel of the community. Overall, I would certainly recommend The Coach to fans of sports drama and coming of age tales.
