In The Chronicle of Casaara by R.S. Embach, lead character Casaara sees visions of destruction and despair that will occur in the world. Seeking the guidance of the Oracle, she is told that she can put a stop to it by defeating the Guardian of Darkness. Together with her allies, Casaara embarks on an epic journey to prevent the oncoming catastrophe before the world is lost forever.
The story starts slowly, yet the pace picks up as it progresses. Embach includes enough back story for readers to familiarize themselves with the world building. The plot is unpredictable, which I like very much. Embach has an intricate and descriptive prose. The style of writing does remind me a bit of the Lord of the Rings books, so conceivably Tolkien fans would have no problem getting acquainted with the story in no time.
There are quite a number of secondary characters; however, I managed to maintain focus on who’s who. Readers would be able to emotionally connect to the lead characters. Overall transition from one chapter to another is excellent. On the other hand, it seems that time transition in several parts of the story is quicker than I anticipated.
On the whole, The Chronicle of Casaara is a solid read. There’s room for improvements, particularly in terms of narrative focus, yet in general Embach delivers his story and is definitely a writer with potential. I like the fact that the book is substantially edited, which makes it a clean read for me.
