I wish I could give this book more than five stars. Included in The Christmas Village and Other Tales of the Magic and Memories of Christmas by author John Christopher are little fantasy tales of Christmas villages and snowy Shakespearean gardens, a few poems, and short stories of family life during the holiday season. Everything ties together so well, and the reader is swept through page after page of magical Christmas stories that reflect not only the holiday spirit, but also a sense of Christian beliefs and the strong bond of family. From the opening story of Alana and Katherine in the Yorkminster village via magical snow to the ending walk through the past, I dare the reader not to tear up at these stories!
Among the many pleasures of reading this story, I found the writing to be superb. It captured the holiday season so well, matching the magic of Christmas to the lyrical, poetic and beautiful prose. By the end of the book, the reader knows the family represented in the book; they have held hands with author John Christopher as he makes his journey through many Christmases; and they have a sense of what the holiday season is truly about. The Christmas Village and Other Tales of the Magic and Memories of Christmas will lift your spirits and make you cry. The book is a nostalgic yet fantasy-like view of family life, and is imaginative and heartwarming. I highly recommend the book for holiday reading by the winking lights of the Christmas tree or beside the fire!
