The Christmas Eve Crash Landing is a holiday-themed storybook for children written by John O'Boyle and illustrated by Mykyta Harets. Nothing is quite as exciting as the night before Christmas. The young boy in this story was sitting by the family’s Christmas tree and thinking about the next day’s presents and Christmas dinner when his mom finally told him that it was time for bed. As they walked towards his room, he noticed his dad was working on his car again, which meant, for his dad, applying a hammer to the engine with varying degrees of force. The boy fell asleep and then was suddenly woken by a man’s warning shout and the jingling of sleigh bells. He dashed into the kitchen to check with his mom and dad, but they seemed to be frozen and motionless. Then a big, bearded man burst through their door. It was Santa! He explained that he had had to crash land his sleigh because of engine failure, and he needed a toolbox and some assistance. The boy wondered about a sleigh needing an engine until Santa broke out the rule-book on Elfin Safety, which of course had all the answers. The two quickly got to work with Dad’s favorite tool. Can they save Christmas?
The Christmas Eve Crash Landing is a clever modern-day retelling of Clement Clarke Moore’s iconic poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” known to most of us as “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” I briefly wondered how successful the retelling could be but then was magically transported into the story as a young boy gets the most marvelous gift of all -- quality time with Santa and the knowledge that he helped save Christmas. What a perfect book for kids and caregivers who are tired of reading the same old Christmas stories! This one is fresh, inventive and fun, and the illustrations brilliantly keep in line with the author’s modern-day approach. This is my first new Christmas kid’s book for this season, and it really helped to boost my enthusiasm for the approaching holidays. The Christmas Eve Crash Landing is most highly recommended.
