In author Richard Michael Cartmel's second installment of the Commander Truchaud series, The Charlemagne Connection, we find the intrepid policeman returning to his family's vineyard in the small French city of Nuis-Saint-Georges, where he's returned to care for his ailing father. While there, his Paris office allows him to adopt the role of acting police chief of the town, just in time to take on a new investigation. What starts as a missing person case with the disappearance of a German tourist quickly turns into a murder investigation when a body is found in the woods. And the further the Commander gets into the case, the more he realizes that this is no ordinary case.
Author Richard Michael Cartmel has done an masterful job of describing the beauties of the Burgundy region of France, and if I had not already yearned to visit there, I certainly would now. He has also done a great job of developing characters that the reader will find likable, believable and interesting, which is no small feat. The Charlemagne Connection would appeal to any reader who loves murder mysteries, police procedurals, or a great story that almost feels like a travelogue with its wonderful descriptions of a popular and delightful destination and the cuisines of that region. I had not read the first book in this series, The Richebourg Affair, and I had no problem following the story line, but I will certainly go back to read it as I enjoyed this book so much. I highly recommend this book and I am very much looking forward to reading more by Richard Michael Cartmel in the very near future.
