The Case of the Parrot Loving Professor by Debbie De Louise is the second book in the Buttercup Bend Mystery series. Cathy expected rough midterms and tight deadlines when she returned to college but never could have predicted it would include discovering the body of her anthropology professor. And the only witness was Dr. Bodkin’s pet parrot, Charlie. She can’t imagine who would want her professor dead but, as she digs into his life, she discovers several who have motives which include estranged children, ex-wives, and the Talking Parrots Club. In the group of parrot enthusiasts, each has a reason for wanting him dead but could any of them have the means to kill him? However, the investigation gets more complicated when she unearths a surprising connection between Dr. Bodkin and a local Mennonite family. She turns to her friend Nancy for help as they use the resources from the detective agency where Nancy works to put all the pieces together.
The author doesn’t waste any time getting to the murder and everything you learn about the professor occurs after that; however, you still get a sense of who he was as a person through what Cathy discovers. Animal rights are an important topic woven into the mystery and serve as an undercurrent to events. Despite being a parrot, Charlie is in the middle of the case and has a vivid personality that sets him apart from other characters. These include Cathy’s friends - particularly Nancy - who help her with the investigation which creates a fun sleuthing element in the story. Debbie De Louise's mystery has heart, though the tone is dark with secrets that are heartbreaking and add an element of humanity. The mystery intricately weaves together each thread for a satisfying conclusion that answers all the questions. The Case of the Parrot Loving Professor is a highly recommended mystery with a plot that is suspenseful, surprising, and full of dark secrets waiting to be revealed.
