‘Delivery man’ Dominick Dunn goes off to the far corners of the globe to retrieve the captured, then turns them over to his employer. He doesn’t actually believe these people are immortal, but the pay is good and he likes to travel. Aaron Wessker has a miserable life, trapped in a dead end job bartending in Vegas, and longing for a family he lacks, or at least the possibility of a girlfriend. Their lives are about to intersect, causing them both to rethink their place in the world. More importantly they will have to change their opinions of the possibility of immortality.
The Calling Tree (A Tale of Immortality) by C.F. Waller is a blend of sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, and thriller where two people badly want to get away from the present life and situation they're in. Waller’s turn of phrase and wry perceptions make the narrative engaging and entertaining. Dominick Dunn and Aaron Wessker are peculiar but relatable characters. The original concept and storyline touching the subject of immortality is a welcome diversion from the mundanity of everyday life for anyone who has ever felt the banality of human connections. The plot twists are unpredictable, exciting, and filled with different kinds of theories and conspiracies to spice things up. It’s enough to keep readers riveted. It also makes me wonder what I would do with immortality if given the chance. The ending is good – Waller concluded the story well. On the whole, The Calling Tree is something different that readers might want to check out.
