In The Book That (Almost) Got Me Fired by Kelly K. James, she decides to take a corporate job after freelancing for 22 years. Freelancing is very different from having formal employment, as she soon realizes. Freelancing offered flexibility in her working hours, and the pay rate was high; however, being in formal employment also has its advantages, like having health benefits that she needed, an opportunity to learn new things, and helping with her problem with anxiety. She also finds herself in various tense situations with her boss as she tends to speak her mind and has to find a way to attend to her life as a mom, love life, and other social issues. How will she handle the changes?
The Book That (Almost) Got Me Fired by Kelly K. James is a memoir like no other. Kelly gives hope to those who want to make career changes, or are experiencing significant changes in their lives, that issues can be dealt with one by one. The memoir is also unique in that it offers specific advice to those starting their jobs that many readers will find to be very useful. Another thing that caught my attention in this thought-provoking work was how to deal with social issues while still working on your career. It also got me thinking about the importance of appreciating yourself. This was a great read, and I look forward to reading something else by Kelly, perhaps on how to be effective in freelancing and content creation.
