Phoebe Chen is an eight-year-old girl who loves to solve mysteries. She wants to become a detective like her father. To improve her investigative skills, she reads and rereads Nancy Drew books. Phoebe has two friends, Luana Porcello and Becky Marshal. One day, after finishing the first of their twice-weekly soccer practice, they discover that Becky has lost her favorite book, an instant New York Times bestseller by Chantal Nolan, a new African American children’s author. Because favorite things aren’t easy to replace, Luana and Phoebe decide to help Becky find her special book. This becomes a new mystery for Phoebe to solve; the mystery of the book bandit. Who took the book? Find out in The Book Bandit: A Phoebe Chen Mystery by Caron Pescatore.
What a fun mystery! I loved watching Phoebe interview witnesses, add suspects to her list, and put the clues together to solve the mystery of the book bandit. This clever tale both excites and intrigues. The Book Bandit by Caron Pescatore is an absorbing, page-turning mystery for kids. Pescatore weaves friendship, mystery, suspense, and adventure into a genuine, engaging, and realistic story. The dialogue between the characters is down-to-earth and captures kids' language perfectly. It's a good read-aloud for any time of the day. I will gladly recommend it every chance I get to every kid I know. This exciting story can be appreciated by both boys and girls alike. It will make kids want to be in Phoebe's team of solving mysteries.
