A young Spaniard must find his way home from the future to save his sister and help his family escape a Native American uprising in the stunning historical era novel, The Blue Mesa by Olivia Godat. In 1664 Don Rafael Montez took possession of his land grant in New Mexico. Soon after, his wife delivered twins, Diego and Estrella. The family built a home among the natives and lived peacefully beside them until Diego and Estrella reached their sixteenth year. Due to the Spanish settlers' treatment of their people, the Northern Pueblo Indian tribes, the Apache, the Tewa, and the Navajo unite, preparing to wage war on the settlers. To protect themselves, the Montez family and their household take refuge in their guard tower. One of the tribes kidnaps Estrella, and Diego follows their trail to retrieve her. After rescuing her, Diego and Estrella inadvertently hide in a sacred cave on the Blue Mesa. A whirlwind forms unexpectedly and whisks Diego away into the twenty-first century. Confused and concerned for his family, Diego chafes to return. Why did the wind pick him up? How can he go home?
