Stan Jones, host of the night time talk show ‘Stan’s Mysteries,’ receives a call from a mysterious man named Max who claims that something very terrible is going to happen to the town of Blairfield, Ohio, if a certain deal isn’t met. When a nurse, Michelle Brooks, is murdered the next day and Max confesses that he’s the killer, Stan realizes that the man may be crazy but he’s dangerous and should be taken seriously.
With only 98 pages, I’m trying not to spoil this fast-paced story for my fellow readers. For me, The Blairfield Caller by Melvin Rivers is a nice homage to the classic horror books and films. Max knows something from Stan’s past, and terrible things will keep happening in Blairfield if Stan won’t confess. Since the first murder, everyone in town is blaming Stan for it. I sympathized with the character, but apparently Stan has a secret and this will definitely intrigue readers.
The premise is well-developed into an interesting plot and both the characterization and dialogue are realistic. The story does remind me of the film Reservation Road but with a vampiric twist. As a novella, The Blairfield Caller is sufficiently polished and the storyline is well delivered, long enough for readers to immerse themselves in the story. On the whole, this is a perfect quick read for a short break that any readers can enjoy, regardless of whether they are horror fans or not.
