The adventure in the Bytarend series continues with Simon Cantan’s The Bite of Minds. Separated into two novellas, The Bite of Monsters and The Bite of the Cult, and a short story, The Bite of Justice, Cantan maintains the eccentricity and humor of the world-building, its characters and creatures. Having read Book 1, The Bite on the Line, I’m delighted to continue the adventure with the cast again; Osric, Tondbert, Isabelle, Professor O'Neill, and other colorful characters that Cantan created.
The story starts with The Bite of Monsters, where the Thief King Tondbert, his girlfriend Isabelle, Professor O'Neill and his assistant Kaylinn are searching for animal-leeches in the woods. They discover another type of creature; the intelligent and adorable bear-like tree huggers or huggies for short. In town, farm animals are being slaughtered, and the people blame Camden, the animal-leech, although there’s no solid evidence that he’s the perpetrator. The townspeople still won’t believe that Camden won’t go berserk and try not to leech. The new mayor, Jenni Styrm, as well as Tondbert and Osric, must solve the case before things get out of hand.
The prose is as clear-cut as ever and the plot is more engaging, has more depth, drama, and progresses much better than its predecessor, which gives a good boost to the character development. The relationships between the cast members become more complex, particularly between Tondbert and Isabelle as well as Osric and Jenni. This is a commendable omnibus sequel from Cantan and I’m truly eager to read the next book.
