To gain freedom for her beloved town, ex-mayor Jenni Styrm has declared herself Duchess. Under her rule, Bytarend keeps expanding as more people are coming to make the town their home. However, the news of her self-declaration has prompted Duke Hatchett to send Caedin Tegart to Bytarend to pull the town back under his rule. When Tegart successfully and forcefully takes over Bytarend as the new mayor, Jenni has to make a choice; fight to reclaim the town and risk her life and others, or flee and build a new life with Osric.
Simon Cantan’s The Bite of Forest Dark (Bytarend, Book 4) continues to develop this fantasy saga. I’ve been following the series since Book 1, and I’m not disappointed. The characters and storyline are progressing nicely. That said, the story has a slightly darker tone, as Tegart is a villain who gets what he wants with no empathy. The story is more mature and that maturity comes with somewhat heavier and gloomy manner. In a way, I’m quite surprised with the direction that the story takes, particularly with the ending. The series trademark humor seems to be overshadowed by this aspect.
All in all, The Bite of Forest Dark is another solid Bytarend installment from Cantan. The Bite of Rust is up next in the series, focusing on the Murder Queen Lila Deadwhisper, who absolutely amazed me in Book 3, The Bite of Death. I’m eager to find out more about her backstory and how she became the world’s deadliest assassin.
