The Beautiful Mare And the Boy Who Gave Thanks by Marc Cohen is an illustrated fable about a boy who goes through various adventures, some good, and some not so good. But in every situation his attitude is always to be thankful for whatever he has. He also takes advantage of the unfortunate circumstances to learn new things. Most children’s books I’ve read that are very good are that way because the art or the story is exceptional. In this case, both are over the top, and so I will talk about each in turn.
First, the artwork and water color pictures are spectacular. Filled with details and color, they kept me wanting to see more with each page I turned. Kia Maddock surpasses any expectations I might have had about the art, and that’s not an easy thing to do. For that alone, it would be worth buying this book. But the prose used to tell this tale is smooth, balanced, and well written. It doesn’t come across as preachy lessons, but gently shows the reader what can happen in one person’s life if he or she can maintain an attitude of simply being thankful.
Wow! What a great read! I loved the ending—it’s great, but there’s no spoilers here. Just know that this book, The Beautiful Mare And the Boy Who Gave Thanks by Marc Cohen, is one you won’t forget about easily and will likely become a classic. This book, though geared toward younger readers, has a timeless message for everyone. Young or old, and all the time. Highly recommended.
