The Band of Starlit Waters is the second book of the Spero's Legacy series by Brad Bussie. After barely surviving the battle with the Shade, Commander Tyler Ryan Tor and his friends are given new instructions by Celest, an ancient of Castle Forgotten. Celest asks Tyler to accompany Crylona to the Deep and save the underwater city of Pelagus and continue to work toward activating the jump gate. Tyler's friends, Razlan and Rolan, undertake a dangerous journey to Alya Cheyl, a city in the northern Avian kingdom, to seek the aid of their king in the upcoming fight against the Shade. Meanwhile, the shaman Samson has the strenuous task of teaching Lanadari to control her unpredictable powers. Tyler and his friends must now unite their allies before an oncoming war as an ancient evil sets its sights on Acrea.
The Band of Starlit Waters takes over from the cliffhanger at the end of the previous installment of Spero's Legacy, The Band of Moonlit Waters. This time around, the characters feel long-established, and you find yourself rooting for your heroes as they struggle against overwhelming odds, and even some morally grey ones who grow on you. The multiple POV narrative really enhances the scope of the story as you get a look at all the various factions and see what they are up to. Brad Bussie provides a glimpse of who seems to be the ultimate antagonist of the series as a whole toward the end of this book. I can't wait to read the sequel. Recommended to sci-fi readers who love action-packed stories and sprawling worlds.
