The Alphabet According to Dewey by Sheri-Lynn Kenny is a fun little book that teaches new words for all the letters in the alphabet in a rhythmic and entertaining way. It does not hurt that there is one cuddly, adorable cat on every page. Kids love animals and cats are just perfect companions. Dewey is doing something on every single page and that makes the learning process that much easier for young readers. Every new word relates to something he does, sometimes with his friends and sometimes alone.
I personally loved the “cuddle” part because a) Dewey is precious and b) how can you not like a cat cuddling with a stuffed cat? I really enjoyed the fact that each letter has a different color and that can be used to make children aware of different colors and help them understand better. All of Dewey’s different poses and the way he lets the camera capture him are endearing and enjoyable. However, there are a few things that could make this book even better, for example, a colored page would be a lot more attractive for children.
That said, the poetic way it was written gives this book a little edge and makes it easier to read to your children. The 'almost poem' allows kids to love what is written and attract their attention. Regardless to say, many of these children will be asking their parents to get their own Dewey this Christmas.
