The Alignment by Douglas L. Wilson is a modern sci-fi/horror story set in the year 2012. Detective Sergeant Sean Dunne shot and killed an unarmed man. It led to the destruction of his family life and a steady decline in his career due to his drunken ways. The only thing keeping him on the police force is that he trained most of his superiors. But even that won't save him any longer. In order to save his career, he takes on a seemingly impossible case. There is a murderer on the streets of Washington DC and Sean must find him or lose everything he’s worked for. And when he meets his only witness, he soon realizes that there may be more to the murderer than he initially thought. Only their electric connection keeps Sean from dismissing Gregor Innescu’s claims outright, especially when Gregor starts talking about vampires and an age-old battle involving his ancestors.
I enjoyed the setting and characters in The Alignment. Douglas L. Wilson takes the classic vampire and gives him a new spin that makes for a chilly tale. The vampires in this story are not reanimated corpses. They are aliens who crave human blood. They are unique yet stay true to the myth in some areas. It is a scary story that has some interesting sub-plots that make it very entertaining. The dynamic between the characters was amazing, especially between Dunne and Ryan. There was humor to lighten the dark scenes. For anyone who likes to read stories when humanity’s existence is threatened by invasion, this is the book for you.
