The Day of the Summertime Blues by Nick Stockton is a story in The Absurd Adventures of Monkey, Puppy, and Lion series. Pete’s dad happens to be home after he catches a terrible cold. The day starts dreadfully with alarms ringing, which ultimately leave his head throbbing with pain. He tries to catch some sleep, but he hears funny noises. At some point, he looks through the window and notices a weird scene. A lion swimming in his neighbor’s pool! He even calls the Animal Control Centre, but who will believe the idea of a lion walking down the lane, let alone swimming in a pool? From seeing lions and monkeys to accidentally ordering ten pizzas, the events of the day leave Pete’s dad baffled. Could it be the effect of the medicine he took?
The Day of the Summertime Blues by Nick Stockton contains unparalleled humor that will have young readers roaring with laughter. I especially liked the encounters between the comical lion and Pete’s dad, and also the ordering and eating of the pizzas. The characters in the book are unique, which adds to the comedy, and as they come together in different scenes, they present an even more interesting mix. Additionally, I liked that the book was written independently of the other books in the series. I did not feel like I needed to have read other books in The Absurd Adventures of Monkey, Puppy, and Lion series to understand this particular one. The book is completely hilarious and will resonate with all children who love action-packed stories.
