"The Pet Finder Kid: Catnapped" by Scott Clements is a lively, quirky and very entertaining book for kids. Thirteen year old Chet is a pleasant but unexceptional youngster. He is not good at anything, especially at making friends, but he does love Zoe, his dog, and he is a great pet owner. His only friend, Douglass, is even dorkier than he is but doesn’t seem to care and the pair make a good team. And Chet has a secret quality. Due to accidentally getting a shot of dog DNA destined for Zoe, he has special powers which give him an advantage when it comes to tracking down popular Heather’s missing cat, Mr Fluffy Pants. This could be his chance to be noticed for once.
There are some great characters in this book. I think even our resourceful, likeable and kind Chet is outshone by the eccentric, imaginative Douglass who is geeky and genuine. The boys’ friendship grows and the two of them develop to be stronger and better at coping with the rather shallow world they find themselves in. The message comes clearly that it doesn’t matter if you are not Mr or Miss Popular in your class and so what if you are not great at sport or not good looking. You have some other ability that makes you special. And a friend is a friend, no matter what other people think of them. Friendship is a special bond. This is a fun book with a great story that all young teens and tweens will enjoy.
