Tercules is written by Marcy Pusey and illustrated by Megan Frank. A family of wild turkeys learns a lot of new things as the chicks begin to explore. The mother must teach the chicks to fend for themselves for the necessities in life. They have to learn to fly, find food, and keep themselves safe from hungry predators. One of the wild turkey chicks is given the name Tercules because he is so strong and powerful in everything he does. The other chicks seem to be annoyed when Tercules cracks the ground while learning to eat, snores too loudly while they try to sleep, and breaks branches they try to fly from. How will Tercules cope with being different than the other chicks? What will the mother turkey have to say about his powerful strength?
The story of Tercules by Marcy Pusey is a beautifully developed tale of a family of wild turkeys that realizes one of them is much stronger than the rest. The way he accidentally breaks branches, eats, flies, and snores seems to upset the rest of the chicks. It is easy to relate to the annoyance the other chicks feel as well as how Tercules feels as he realizes he is different from the others. I love how this story expresses that it’s all right to excel at the things we do. The illustrations by Megan Frank are beautiful and entertaining as they tell the story through fun pictures that kids can easily follow along with. I recommend Tercules to anyone with children and hope Pusey and Frank team up for future stories.
