Teed Off: A Golf Course Mystery by J. Peter Hoyer is a fictional insight into the investigation of murder, initiated by the discovery of human skeletal remains at a Fort Ryder Training area, adjacent to its golf course. As this gruesome discovery was made on Federal land, three separate agencies are tasked to find the killer: local police detectives, Army CID investigators, and the FBI. The FBI’s Special Agent Ralph Cabrera takes the lead role in this already complex task and as his team delves further into the facts of the case, their efforts seem to become a catalyst, triggering further deadly attacks. In a race to solve this deadly mystery, the stakes are life or death and there can be no winner apart from the next potential victim.
J. Peter Hoyer’s Teed Off: A Golf Course Mystery is an intriguing read, which contains a wealth of insight into the workings of the various agencies involved and the golfing world in general. It is also adept at creating vivid imagery of the locations and characters involved, leading to an immersive experience. You can almost feel the mist engulf you and perceive the hidden threats surrounding you as you traverse the forested marshland around Training Area 16. What sets Teed Off apart for me, however, is the unexpected twist that reveals itself in the climax, which leaves an uncomfortable feeling in the reader and calls into question just how often this may actually occur in real life; something I am sure happens more than we may realize.
