Taking Action: Creating Social Change through Strength, Solidarity, Strategy, and Sustainability Rebecca L Toporek and Muninder Kaur Ahluwalia is an interactive guide and workbook consisting of various principles, all designed to assist those who wish to make a difference or advocate for social change on existing injustices. Taking action requires a long-term commitment by everyone involved; it is not just a one-person job. There are many barriers and challenges to be overcome in addressing existing policies and practices. Through various activities, models and questionnaires, the authors encourage us to become active participants in the world around us, with a passion for positive change and action.
Authors Rebecca L Toporek and Muninder Kaur Ahluwalia are open and honest about their past experiences and resulting beliefs in their book Taking Action. The reader can recognize their personal values and beliefs that spark passion and commitment, and the authors offer solutions to possible barriers. There is a section on personal skills, qualities, and knowledge required of a person who has a passion for activism which can assist in identifying future educational requirements. The section on resources helps us to understand that there are many financial requirements for taking action. I enjoyed the section titled “What I Look Like Makes A Difference” and can apply these principles of “Identities and Life Experience” in my own quest to help others like myself who have become ostracized and discriminated against, being held accountable for the sins of our forefathers. “Becoming and Being Observant” and “Your Economic Power” are other important sections. The book contains references and suggested reading material for further information. A detailed index is helpful for referring back to specific sections. A great book for activists and community workers.
