Susie Strickland Sizzling Striker, Part 2: The New School by K A Mulenga continues the story of a talented girl athlete who loves soccer/football. Susie’s dad has a new job, and the family must move to a new town and a new school. Susie is both sad and excited about the move. She will miss her team and teammates, but she likes the big backyard where she can practice and hopes to join a soccer team at her new school. However, on the first day of school, Susie is disappointed to find that her new school doesn’t have a team. Fortunately, she later sees a sign for a soccer team in the community that needs players. Excited and happy, she tries out and is accepted.
In Susie Strickland Sizzling Striker Part 2, K A Mulenga gives us a story that many kids can relate to whether they’re interested in sports or not. Susie is a likable character who experiences the sadness of leaving her old school, friends, and soccer teammates behind as well as the excitement of moving into a new house and a new school, something young readers may also have experienced. The story shows how Susie has a loving and supportive relationship with her mom, who comforts her when she learns that there’s no soccer at her new school and Susie wonders what she’ll do if she can’t play her favorite sport. The colorful illustrations help to convey to young readers the emotions and actions of the characters, and the tone of the story is uplifting as the ending is a happy one.
