Super Doll is a work of adventure fiction aimed at young adult readers and was penned by author Erin Schulz. The central character is Ruth ‘Piper’ Pfeiffer, a seventeen-year-old who has learned a lot of independence and insolence in her life as she is shunted around as an Air Force child. When Piper is offered eight weeks in the Caribbean to practice her Spanish, she relishes the idea of freedom, but soon finds that it comes with a price. On the mysterious island of Carabajel, warring factions vie for supremacy and there is even a little magic afoot. Piper’s sudden involvement in their quarrel lands her straight in an adventure she never bargained for.

Author Erin Schulz tells a culturally unique and fascinatingly realistic tale of magic, romance, and independence that young adult readers are sure to enjoy, and adult readers will find much to adore too. The atmospheric descriptions of the Black Mariahs and the General’s people bring a new culture to life that Piper – and the reader – must learn all about, delivering some superb lessons in mystery and intrigue that any writer could appreciate. The scenery is lavish and the characters are very likable from the off, particularly Piper for her rebellious ways and cool attitude. When put to the test, she becomes a heroine to truly fall in love with, and the romance elements of the tale are not overdone or overtaking of the main plot. Overall, Super Doll is a high-quality YA work that’s not to be missed.

Seventeen-year-old Ruth Pfeiffer wants a change. In her seventeen years, she’s lived on six air bases in six states—Alaska, Nevada, Texas, Wyoming, New Mexico, and New Jersey—and each one was indistinguishable from the others. So when she wins a contest to spend eight weeks on the Caribbean island of Carabajel, studying Spanish, she finds a ticket out of dull towns and military bases that have defined her life.

But Piper quickly discovers that things aren’t the way they seem the moment she sets foot on the island. There is disturbing darkness lurking against the beautiful backdrop of the island. While she grabs the attention of the locals, she also finds herself at the center of a long time conflict, caught in the crossfire between two powerful enemies of the island—General Miguel Castillo who rules the island, and Malfaedra, the high priestess of the Black Mariahs. The Mariahs practice dark magic, even though they started as an order of nuns. Things escalate with the son of Castillo falling for Piper. Can she uncover her secret connection to this island before it is too late?

Super Doll by Erin Schulz is a great novel for fans of young adult fiction. It is filled with adventure and features an elaborately developed female protagonist. When I finished this book I immediately wanted to read a prequel and a sequel to the story. Unfortunately, neither one exist yet. From the title of the book I expected something very different then it delivered. Do not be fooled - this is not a cutesy book about a summer fling. The pages are full of mystery and intrigue all set within an exotic location with easily relatable characters and a story-line that keeps you guessing. Hopefully the author will continue telling this story so we can learn what happened in Carabajel before and after the events that unfold in Super Doll. Highly Recommend.
