Lisa Marie Scholl took her summer job at the Mount Flynn Baseball Park in Rock Falls, Wisconsin a little more seriously than many young high-schoolers. She just wasn’t in need of spending money. Lisa Marie had a goal. Just as the father of her namesake, Lisa Marie dreamed of a musical career in the footsteps of Elvis Presley. The music of The King defined music as far as Lisa Marie was concerned. As soon as she acquired enough money, she could purchase a guitar to accompany her voice. With the Central Region Babe Ruth Baseball Championship taking place in Mount Flynn, Lisa Marie was not only excited about her earned salary, but she also had the chance to sing the National Anthem at the beginning of the championship game. When Lisa catches the eye of Giants pitcher Hank Caro, she learns the meaning of doing what you love for the sake of that love.

Summer Snow is a short young adult coming of age novel told without the baggage of questionable language or subject matter. Author Caroline Akervik presents a charming story of young emotion that leads the reader to speculate on a first kiss, first boyfriend, and personal awareness. The dialogue is realistic and timeless in its presentation. With universal themes of young love, baseball, and rock and roll, it would difficult for Akervik to go wrong. For the young reader weary of fantasy or not truly a reader longing for the heaviness of vampire stories, I wholeheartedly recommend Summer Snow as a top contender on any young person’s reading list.
