Summer Sin by KS Marsden is the fourth book in the Northern Witch series. Mark has reunited with his boyfriend Damian, but their mission to London ended with the tragic loss of Mark's friend, Eadric. As he struggles to get his life back to normal, he's recruited by his Nanna to befriend an enemy, and by the demon possessing his boyfriend to track down who is releasing beasts after him and put a stop to it. He has his friends back and everything seems to have returned to normal. His life finally seems to have balance with his boyfriend, friends, and witch lessons. Then he must stage a daring rescue that will require him to ally with a former enemy. To save the day he may need to rely on the darker elements within himself.
The events of Summer Sin pick up where The Breaking left off, taking place hours after Eadric's funeral. The loss of Eadric hangs over the story with a strong presence of the character felt through the grief that Mark experiences. This is the first real loss that Mark has felt and it leaves him with an emotional struggle to connect with his feelings. His grief is an important component of the story as he realistically deals with his guilt, which adds more vulnerability to his character and explores the relationship he had with Eadric. KS Marsden weaves in a few normal days where Mark gets a chance to experience a simple life and breathe again after Eadric's death by reconnecting with Damian and his friends. The touches of normalcy are necessary to the evolution of his character and Marsden does well with growing Mark a little more in each book.
His coming-of-age journey has been a whirlwind of romance, heartbreak, demons, friendship, and witchcraft. The character of Michelle has been on the wrong side since the beginning but Marsden has drawn back a layer - unexpected and charming - to the character that added humor and heart to the story. It also creates the opportunity for a fun undercover mission with her and Mark that is humorous. The story focuses on the adventure that involves him doing Robert a favor and gives a little insight into what a demon prison looks like. Fast-paced and leaving you wanting more, Summer Sin is another great installment in the series that brings another dose of charm, humor, magic, demons, and romance.
