Stress, sexual and mental abuse, depression, and mental illness are all factors that can lead to not only suicidal thoughts but suicidal actions. Suicide rates are high amongst young adults primarily within the gay, military, and college communities. Suicides are close to author Mark Waters's heart. “I thought the odds were beaten and deceived myself into thinking lightning never strikes twice, but sadly it struck again; this time, it was my niece,” says Mark Waters, who experienced the residue of suicide with his sister first and his niece following. Mark Waters gives us an in-your-face fictional story in Suicide by Death: A Story Based On True Events with a backdrop of truth. In Suicide by Death, Clair floats through a daily cocktail of life that brings with it depression, despair, and disappointments. Clair shows all of the signs; she felt that the only way out of her predicament was to end her life. Clair ponders deeply about how to commit suicide; should she try taking pills, shooting herself, stabbing herself, jumping, or hanging - which should she choose this time? Despite the fact that Clair has made several attempts to end her life, maybe this time the results will be different.
As you read through Suicide by Death by Mark Waters, you are able to see a variety of people that you may know personally who are experiencing bouts of suicidal thoughts. Suicide tendencies, including attempts, show up in several ways, and it not only affects the person that commits the act, but it leaves indelible marks on those who remain. I personally try to listen to and look for the signs in those around me that seem to be swamped by the undercurrents of life. We must do our part to help change the pattern of suicide and bring hope to those that feel hopeless. If you are experiencing any type of despair, know that you are not alone so seek help by talking to someone.
