A part of me wants to say that Stubborn Pilgrimage: Resistance and Change in Ontario English Teaching by Dan Gutteridge is a book for English teachers by an English teacher, but that might be a little misleading. Stubborn Pilgrimage makes fascinating and informative reading for anyone interested in the evolution of modern education in North America. I teach English as a second language in Asia, particularly China, now, and I see similar academic and social battles and viewpoints expressed and played out in a very different arena than that of North America. Books like Stubborn Pilgrimage can play a major role in helping administrators, teachers, bureaucrats, parents, and local leaders decide how they want their children to learn English, and other subjects for that matter.
Stubborn Pilgrimage is very well written in a formal academic style suited to the subject. There are plenty of footnotes and references for those of us concerned about basing our decisions on facts. I found it easy to read, but my background is in education so I have read this style before. It is a sort of academic history the way education has developed in Ontario and North America in general. It is very well organized and very well written. Dan Gutteridge obviously loves his subject. I am American and had never heard of B.D. Diltz, but I found his accomplishments something I would love to learn more about, though maybe in a less academic form, say a memoir or a biography. This is a great book if you are interested in or curious about the future direction of teaching.
