Strange Winds by T.E. Harkins is the first book in the Raven’s Wing Irish Murder Mystery series. Savannah makes her way to Ireland after a letter from her late mother gives her a mysterious message - to search for a woman named Audrey. Leaving Florida behind, Savannah engages with the locals. The exploration of local castle ruins takes a surprising turn when she encounters a distressed woman in white who vanishes as quickly as she appears. Savannah reports what she saw but she can’t get the woman out of her mind. Curious to discover the woman’s identity, she begins investigating, only to find her way into a murder mystery that draws the wrong attention.
The woman in white is a great segue into Irish folklore which is a fun element to get to know the different characters and the village. The local pub serves as a charming introduction to the village and plants the seed about the woman in white that carries throughout the story. The village is an important element of the story as the mystery could not occur without the Irish backdrop. T.E. Harkins establishes a beautiful and scenic setting with each location playing a key part in how events unfold, from the castle ruins to the pub. The writing successfully shapes the plot through specifically written dialogue. Different characters such as Audrey, who has answers, and Miss Madeline help ground Savannah’s character in one location. The sleuthing, accompanied by an adorable dog sidekick, is filled with humorous moments and plenty of twists and turns. Strange Winds is a charming start to the series with a stunning location, interesting locals, a suspenseful murder mystery, and delightful folklore.
