In Station Coroner (Delta Fringe Series, Book 1) by Heather Lee Dyer, 17-year-old Brenna ‘Bren’ Teves is a loner living and working with her coroner father at Delta Station. Formerly a resident on the peaceful Mars Colony, she moved to the station at the outer edge of the galaxy after the death of her mother. Nicknamed ‘la muerta’, the dead girl, Bren slowly gains some respect from the others when she prevents a catastrophe on an old science cruiser, which ultimately leads to her involvement in the investigation of Tempest－a science vessel found abandoned in the Fringe－and its missing crew. She soon discovers the dangerous secret behind Tempest's misfortune which threatens the safety of all Delta's residents.
Dyer's Station Coroner is a suspenseful YA sci-fi with a dose of teen romance. The story premise is intriguing and well executed in a fast-paced plot. The world-building is not overly complex to be imagined and I, as a reader, greatly appreciated it. Protagonist Bren is easy to root for. She's smart, level-headed and not afraid to stand up for herself when necessary. Her strengths and flaws are relatable. On the other hand, it wasn't easy to warm up to Derek but his character development is nicely handled and I hope there'll be more story development for Annie in the series. All and all, this is a swift and entertaining read that is aptly written for its targeted readers. It's a solid debut for the Delta Fringe Series and I look forward to reading the sequel.
