Static by S.K. Anthony is the second book in The Luminaries series, an engaging, well-plotted urban fantasy with great potential for entertainment. Kevin Pierce is a teleporter, a genetically enhanced human being with extraordinary abilities, charged to bring down dangerous criminals for the government. It’s a job he loves and one that fits perfectly with his set of skills. As a Luminary, he has all it takes to bring down the most vicious and dangerous elements, but when a group of rebel Luminaries attacks his organization, he knows that he has to take his game a step higher. As he moves from one shocking attack to another, Kevin has to reevaluate his position, choose his loyalties carefully, and tread a dangerous path with caution. But his world is about to sink when he experiences the worst form of betrayal, coming from very close quarters. It is interesting to find out what happens next.
I never read the first book in this series, but my curiosity was immediately aroused the moment I opened this one with the intriguing letter that bore neither name nor location. I was hooked, and even though I knew nothing about what happened in the entry before this one, I never found it difficult to get into the story, thanks to S.K. Anthony’s exceptional storytelling skills. The characters are great and they are well-developed in a way that readers will find hard to resist. I also loved the first person narrative voice, absorbing and exciting, pulling readers into the worldview of the protagonist and forcing them to follow events from their angle. Static features great writing, awesome dialogues, and powerful themes, a delightful story for fans of urban fantasy.
