St. Alden's (The Completely Abridged Series) by David-Michael Harding promises readers a short novel for busy people. The tale is set at the mythic and supernatural St. Alden’s college, a place where young students Crealand, Gel and Chapin meet with Crealand’s grandfather, the Templar Knight who has pledged to protect the mystical university. This place of untold wonder becomes a dangerous plane of existence at night, when wolves and their wicked masters emerge to try to claim the university and its treasures for themselves by eliminating its Guardian and any other who might stand in their way.
David-Michael Harding presents flawless prose and excellent storytelling in St. Alden’s, with plenty of action, scientific knowledge, mythology and folklore. The setting of the university and its description is also beautifully done; it is easy to imagine yourself there. For me the only snag is that this Completely Abridged Series, as it is called, could have stood to be a lot less abridged in terms of character development. I find it hard to invest in a story where an everlasting love is developed by a couple who hardly know each other in only three dozen pages, but if you are a reader who reads only for plot and action, then St. Alden’s will satisfy your tastes. If you usually read for depth of character and emotional investment, then be prepared to sacrifice that for the sake of the action in this story, because even if it’s not your usual style, its imaginative setting and vivid action scenes are still well worth experiencing.
