Children need to learn how to share as sharing is one of the most important characteristics required in society today. So many have more than enough, while others struggle to survive. In Spencer the Squirrel Scurries to Share, Spencer learns the joy of giving and its importance. Leni Porfiri shares this delightful children’s story with the reader to help children understand that this world is a community, and we must work collectively to help each other thrive. Spencer worked hard all fall to gather as many acorns as he could find. He did not care if other squirrels were able to gather enough acorns. During the winter, Spencer realizes that he is snug and smug in his den while other squirrels suffer. His compassion kicks in, and he goes about correcting the inequalities of life.

What do you do when you realize there is a need in your community? You have choices to make. You could ignore the situation and pretend it does not exist. I have seen way too many communities do just this. Another option is to share what you have with those who do not have enough. In Spencer the Squirrel Scurries to Share, Spencer decides to show compassion and do his part in alleviating the food shortage in his community. Leni Porfiri writes engagingly, so children will become involved in the story. The color pencil illustrations by Olha Tkachenko add visual delight. Read this book to or with your children, then discuss how Spencer showed kindness, compassion, and love. Talk to your children about what they can do to help others. Children who grow up learning how to care for others will make the best citizens in the future.
