Fourteen-year-old Cherrimina was a quiet child. Her life revolved around Nanna (her grandmother) and her mother. The arrival of a foreigner, a woman named Dove, changed this situation. She and Cherrimina began spending time together. Then, one fateful night, Cherrimina witnessed Dove committing a crime. This incident affected Cherrimina's innocent heart in a lot of ways. She questioned everything she believed in. She struggled with the decision of helping her friend. Just when she was making peace with her thoughts, Cherrimina's life changed drastically. Sophistries of Summer Days by Jenny Lofters follows Cherrimina as she beats all the odds and creates a life of her own.
Jenny Lofters has woven a beautiful tapestry of characters in Sophistries of Summer Days. Whether it is the over-judgemental Sister Lady or the hard-working Barabbas, each character leaves a mark in the heart of the reader. Side characters also depict the ability to change that each human possesses. Bulla, one of the side characters, changed from a rude casanova to a groomed gentleman. Barabbas changed from a thief to a kind and diligent man. The bizarre sayings, rituals, and beliefs of the people of this town were very amusing. One of my favorite remarks is: "Sister Lady once said that women who smoked cigarettes did not wear underwear." Such comments are a source of entertainment in Sophistries of Summer Days. By narrating the story of Cherrimina, it is evident that Jenny Lofters encourages readers to believe in themselves. Cherrimina, who started as a fearful fourteen-year-old girl, gradually metamorphosed into an independent woman. Readers will be inspired by her magnificent transformation.
