Songweaver Lost by David E. Gaston drew me into the story from the first page. Twelve-year-old Jessica Blackwater has more to deal with than the typical middle schooler. One morning, while struggling with her anger, she decides to skip the bus and walk to school. She meets a barefoot young girl playing music on something like pan flutes. The girl is lively and joyful and then magically disappears, promising to meet Jessica again the next day. As her interactions with Ariel continue, Jessica confides in a next-door neighbor and a former teacher about her mysterious friend. As they work together to unravel what is happening, a fantastical journey ensues for all of them. Will they be able to solve the mystery of Ariel?

David E. Gaston has created an immersive and captivating story in Songweaver Lost. The worlds Ariel and Jessica travel to are described so vividly that I felt as if I was right there with them. So many interesting themes are explored, using research, science, and intuition to determine what steps to take next. The friendship that develops between Ariel and Jessica is organic and strong, as is the bond that builds between Jessica and her companions, who are helping her figure out the mystery of Ariel. The author writes with such depth and feeling that I never wanted the story to end. Songweaver Lost will enthrall all readers, no matter which genre you enjoy. Be prepared to put aside everything else as you will not want to put this book down until you finish it.
