Drew Lane’s Somewhere To Fight For is a heartwarming story about the tenacity and determination of a young girl named Kate. Instead of spending her summer holiday relaxing by the beautiful river that runs through her town or just hanging out with her friends, she decides she has to come up with a plan to save her hometown of Wickliffe. The small Australian town is slowly dying. All of the businesses have left and schools have closed. One church is still serving the flock, but plans are being made to move the congregation. The local pub is only open one day a week. Most of the families living there have called Wickliffe home for generations, but they are tired of fighting against what is looked upon by outsiders as progress. Kate has just completed Grade Six, but loves her hometown so much that she is willing to risk what no one else will to save it.
I really enjoyed reading Somewhere To Fight For. Drew Lane paints a beautiful picture of the tiny village. Wickliffe comes alive with Lane’s vivid descriptions. Kate is a strong, likeable character. I loved the fact that she has faults, because a well-rounded character cannot be perfect. Her strength and courage in the face of adversity did not break her spirit. The plot has a villain that readers will love to hate, as well as conflict in Kate’s life that brings depth and adds interest and tension. This is the perfect book for tweens, teens and adults.
