Something Said: Fictions and Verse is a work of collected fiction in the form of poetry and prose, which was penned by author Mark Anthony Smith. As the title suggests, this collection brings together many different works with different perspectives and genres, creating an anthology of Smith’s previously published work from around 2016 to the present day. In total there are twenty seven works, ranging from touching and emotive character studies to surreal, arresting moments with high atmosphere. The reads make perfect coffee break moments for their short, sharp impacts, but will be sure to leave fiction fans thinking about their messages long after they have put the book down again.
Author Mark Anthony Smith knows how to grip an audience and work with a short space of words to craft something that lingers in your brain. I was captivated by The Scrimshaw Pipe from its first line, a rare gift in writers that encourages one to read on and on, devouring more and more moments of glory from their pen. I felt there was something highly reminiscent of Raymond Carver in the style and approach, offering intense moments with characters, and poetic expressions that conjure up vivid pictures of the mind. I enjoyed the more darkly themed pieces the most, with short grammatical structures that built up tension really well, and oddly placed objects and images that leave you off kilter in the best possible way. Overall, I would certainly recommend Something Said: Fictions and Verse for all readers who want bitesize moments of written excellence.
