Soft Hugs for Mommy by Mandy Farmer teaches children about Fibromyalgia. With this mysterious condition becoming more and more common, it’s likely that we all know someone with this condition, or perhaps you suffer from it personally. This picture book takes children on a quick journey of discovering what it’s like having Fibromyalgia, and some helpful ways they can help Mommy, or any other friend or relative, who has Fibromyalgia. From being diagnosed to the day-to-day life living with this painful disorder, life can be hard, and even scary at times for children with a mother or parent who deals with these issues. This story sheds some light on what Fibro is and that while it’s hard sometimes, it doesn’t mean Mommy loves them less, or that they should be frightened. Mommy has good days too, but, on the bad days, she could use and appreciate the love and acceptance and extra pair of helping hands around the house.

Soft Hugs for Mommy by Mandy Farmer is a heartwarming story. As someone who has Fibromyalgia, and growing up with a mother who also has it, I appreciate this book all the more. Had I not experienced it, I might not understand the immense toll it can take on a person, and how hard it is to run a household with the unpredictability that comes with dealing with Fibromyalgia. To many, it seems mysterious, and even garners scoffs from those who lack the proper understanding of how debilitating this condition can be, and often suddenly without warning. Because of this, we don’t often think of or see resources talking about Fibromyalgia with children, and this is the first time I’ve seen the topic addressed in this way. Mandy Farmer not only fills a need with this story but does so in a loving and understanding way, encouraging mothers and children with this touching story. Here she shares a little of her own story and presents it in a way that is relatable for many similar families learning to live with Fibro.
