Smarty Pants! is the first installment in The Tyler Files, written by Brian Rock and illustrated by Joshua Dawson. Tyler is a fifth-grader with a problem – his pants have started to talk! Never knowing when to be quiet, Tyler’s trousers suddenly hit on Tyler’s crush, insult the school bully and talk too loudly in the library. The problem seems to intensify as the day wears on, and it follows Tyler around everywhere he goes. Already in trouble with Principal Stern for mischief-making, it will indeed take a miracle for Tyler to get through his upcoming Math exam unscathed!
I finished reading Smarty Pants! at least half an hour ago, and I am still smiling. Brian Rock’s fun-filled tale of an ordinary boy who dons extraordinary pants is an absolute laugh-out-loud, top-shelf thrill to read, and I am so glad that I was lucky enough to pluck it from the bookshelf today. The teachers’ names are all quite clever, matching the subject they teach in the most literal way possible. I was grateful that I was the only one at home when I read parts of the book (i.e. Tyler and his pants reading in the library), as the book which Tyler’s pants were reading caused more than just a chuckle or three.
The school bully, the school principal and the school know-it-all each made a wonderful contribution to the story line as Tyler’s pants dance and talk their way through every conceivable situation which lands in their lap (pardon the pun, folks). I not only loved reading Smarty Pants!, but the wonderful, feel-good story in amongst all of the humor was well-written and beautifully illustrated. I wholeheartedly recommend Smarty Pants! to readers aged 7-15, as well as to those who are young at heart or simply enjoy well-written tales which leave you with a lingering smile.
