Slow Drip by Gary Polisano is well named: that title describes the serial killer’s methodology, right from how he selects his victims to how he kills them. It also captures Polisano’s style: a slow drip of information following a block-buster opening chapter that shows the killer doing his ugly deed on a beautiful 24-year-old blonde. The pace slows in the following chapters as Polisano introduces a key character in this thriller; young baseball star hopeful, Jeff Cronin. Not every reader will be patient watching two high school teams competing, but wait for it! Jeff is critical to helping the police identify the killer, so curb any impatience and Polisano will ever so subtly build the tension inside you until it explodes in the final chapters.
The serial killer, who remains nameless till close to the end, is one nasty, deranged and deeply tormented soul who is hell-bent on succeeding in his deadly mission. His focus is always on beautiful young women whom he sees as whores. Is his mission sexually oriented? If not, what drives him? This is what gifted detective Tina Patterson is trying to find out. Victims are piling up as the killer moves toward his target of killing 10 women. He stalks them, plans meticulously, eluding and baffling Tina and her associates. When young Jeff, one of 2 boys who stumbled across victim #3, informs Tina that he got a glimpse of the killer “in his dreams”, can Tina put any credence in such a ridiculous clue? Does she?
Gary Polisano is a good writer who is as meticulous in providing details as this killer is in capturing and killing his victims. Polisano’s characters are realistic and readers will identify with the love of the families involved and the horror of the victims as they lay dying. The 'slow drip' of blood in the opening becomes a downpour at the end. Incidentally, this book will appeal to teen readers who will relate to young Jeff’s travails on the baseball field and his first attempts at dating, but even more so if they enjoy heart-racing thrillers.
