Sky Blue Dragonfly is a children’s tale about bullying, written by Daralyn Brody and illustrated by Samantha Shasenaye Elliot. As a young girl walks home through the park, she delights in the magical sight of the clouds above and their unique shapes, as well as the beauty of the flora and fauna around her. While talking to the animals and plants, she comes across a dragonfly pin, which a group of bullies forcibly take from her. During the verbal and physical assault of the young girl, the dragonfly magically comes to life and protects her, chasing the bullies away.
I truly enjoyed this tale, as it deals with a subject very close to my heart – the fight against bullying. Although friendly and popular with others, the one time the young girl ventures out alone, she is bullied for no other reason than her being an easy target. The fantasy aspect of the story was quite enjoyable, with the pendant coming to life. Daralyn Brody’s highly imaginative and colorful tale of a young girl who has a special place in her heart for the beauty in nature struck a chord which I was easily able to relate to.
Sky Blue Dragonfly targets the difficult subject matter of bullying head-on, showing how a day can be so beautiful and perfect one moment, and then be muddied up and terrifying the next by the cruel actions of others. It is interesting how bullies always seem to target the vulnerable, especially when their target is alone, and shows the most obvious message, which is that all bullies are cowards. I very much enjoyed Sky Blue Dragonfly – both the story and the illustrations – and recommend this well-written tale to young children and adults alike, so they might be aware of what goes on around them and take precautions, ensuring they do not end up as a target.
