Skin Scam: Dying to be Beautiful by Melvin L Elson is a non-fiction guide to health and fitness that focuses on cosmetic dermatology. The first few chapters include interesting discussions on the psychology of those seeking this treatment and the behind-the-scenes situation with titles like Skin Scam, Self Esteem, Who Should Touch You, and the Turf Battle. The next chapters discuss the vitamins, chemicals, acids, and sunscreen available on the market and what they do to our skin. The chapters that follow cover the more invasive procedures like mini lifts, mesotherapy, Botox, fillers, materials, microdermabrasion, liposuction, thermage, and tanning beds. We also learn about the regulations on physicians and how businesses circumvent them. The author provides his readers with the right questions to ask their dermatologists, plastic surgeons, medspa, or cosmetic salespersons and gives the real meaning behind their answers. Finally, a guide to beauty, health, and well-being is included.
Melvin L Elson’s Skin Scam is written for baby boomers and anyone considering cosmetic surgery or any kind of facial rejuvenation. The book is highly informative. Emphasizing the training necessary to perform the minimum noninvasive procedures, this book contains a wealth of information on the subject. A table of contents at the beginning would have been helpful, especially in case readers wanted to review a specific subject. As a medical practitioner with over 25 years of experience, the author is highly credible. He has also consulted with drug and cosmetic companies, developed skin care lines, done all types of research, started cosmetic companies, and even done infomercials. His personal experience is extensive and his opinions are authentic and persuasive. Highly recommended.
