"Silver’s Treason" by Clifford Dunbar is an unusual and challenging book. Military and political thriller with a touch of sci-fi/paranormal, this is a fast-paced book set in the volatile Colombian jungle and has US Army personnel facing drug lords and rebels. Jeff Thompson is one of the privates who works with an H-dog, a specially bred animal that possesses special powers. It is tough for both the owner and the dog with any sign of weakness being punished - possibly with death in the dog’s case. Jeff is on a mission to rescue a kidnapped girl but events along the way lead his employers to believe that he and his dog, Silver, have become turncoats and gone over to the enemy. Jeff and Silver now become the hunted, facing two brutal assailants.

This is a no-holds-barred kind of book, very in-your-face and gritty. This is a book where we are plunged into the middle of things from the very start. However, although the action is violent and merciless, the writing is not aggressive. Dunbar has almost a reporter’s style. He tells things the way they are. Any emotion must come from the reader. There isn’t much character development, but the human hero is sympathetic and earns our admiration. So does Silver. The central idea of these experimental dogs is a fascinating one and Dunbar is certainly not short of imagination. The plot constantly takes the reader by surprise. It is a dark novel, almost dystopian but the ending brings a glimmer of hope. In conclusion, an exciting and original novel.
