Silent Invasion is another enthralling work of science fiction from author Chris Shockowitz. In a subtle twist on the alien discovery story line, this tale focuses on two central protagonists who come together with an impossible shared dilemma. There’s Jeff Smith, CIA, who finds himself on an assignment to follow a mysterious woman to Africa when suspicious unearthly materials are brought to the country’s attention. Then there’s Amber van Hosteen, the woman he is following, who takes it upon herself to investigate what she initially thinks is a corporate cover-up where governments are being exploited. But the substance being made by this corporation is only the beginning of the worries for Jeff and Amber, and their very lives may be at stake because of what they have discovered.
I really and thoroughly enjoyed this adventure from start to finish, particularly because of the unlikely character dynamic between the CIA agent and the plucky journalist. Author Chris Shockowitz uses some expected tropes in a wise and witty way whilst staying away from the annoying generalizations of young female journalistic characters getting into trouble. Amber is an intelligent lead female posed as Jeff’s equal, and together they form an excellent team in discovering the non-earth materials and the organization which has created them. The chase across many locations is well paced and lively, and the overall plot comes to a satisfying conclusion that makes sense from start to finish in the tale. Overall, Silent Invasion is an entertaining and thoroughly well-crafted read for science fiction fans.
