Silenced in Salem by Cat Green is a Nina Brown Paranormal Cozy Mystery. Nina's latest review brings her to Salem where she gets to stay at a boutique hotel just in time for Halloween. Not only does she enjoy delicious food but she even meets the handsome chef that prepares the dishes. After the owner of the hotel is found dead, the police begin pointing the finger in the wrong direction, which leads Nina to draw on her unique abilities to find the true killer. Adding to Nina's problems, ghosts from the past begin haunting the hotel, including that of the original owner.
The story quickly weaves in some heart as Nina forms a connection with the celebrity chef, giving her someone to open up to about her unique abilities and perhaps giving her a chance at romance. Lovable characters draw out the charm of the world that Cat Green has brought to life. Characters such as the adorable Jasper provides the humor while the sweet friendship between Nina and Holly drives the heart. Jasper continues to be a shining star through his peppy attitude, devotion to being a model for Holly's doggy clothes, and diva flair. Green does a splendid job of adding adorable and well-rounded animal characters that pair well with the human characters.
The location of Salem provides new supernatural opportunities and Green uses the mystery as a way to explore Nina's ability to see ghosts and propel the story forward. Ghosts give a historical element to the rich history of Salem by literally connecting the mystery to those from the past such as the hotel's previous owner and family. Weaving the past into the plot gives the story a similar tone to that of the previous book in the series which saw Nina's imagination bringing the history of France to life. These touches give the story a unique quality that makes the Nina Brown series stand out. Add in a subtle supernatural flair and some ghostly presence, and Silenced in Salem gives you a truly original story that creatively blends these elements with murder, mystery, humor, and charm.
